Arsenal Ladies defender Alex Scott started England’s 1-0 defeat to France in their opening Women’s World Cup match on Tuesday.
Eugenie Le Sommer’s first-half strike proved the difference as Mark Sampson’s side started the competition with a loss.
Siobhan Chamberlain, Jordan Nobbs, Lianne Sanderson and Casey Stoney were all unused substitutes for England. Their next match is tomorrow (Saturday) when they face Mexico.
Arsenal midfielder Vicky Losada scored for Spain in their 1-1 draw against Costa Rica.
Losada pounced inside the area to fire Spain into the lead before Costa Rica equalised within a minute.
Natalia Pablos Sanchon also played the full 90 minutes for Spain.
Meanwhile, Arsenal Ladies have completed the signing of teenage goalkeeper Sian Rogers from Birmingham City.
The 17-year-old has not played for the first time this season for the Blues.
Rogers has played for England since the age of 13 and featured in the Under-17 team which qualified for this summer’s European Championships.
