Arsenal Ladies full-back Steph Houghton feels it would be a “special moment” if they win the Women’s Super League title at Meadow Park tomorrow.

The Gunners need just a point against Doncaster Rovers Belles to guarantee the title, but could already be champions if Birmingham City Ladies fail to beat Bristol Academy in an earlier kick-off.

Arsenal won the title on Merseyside last season, and Team GB star Houghton is hopeful they can repeat the feat in front of their own fans this year.

“When we won the title in Liverpool it was strange because it was only us celebrating,” she admitted, “so it would be a special moment for the girls if we win it at Boreham Wood.”

Should results not go their away, the Gunners would face a tricky title showdown in Birmingham next weekend, and Houghton is keen to avoid such a scenario.

“Hopefully we can wrap it up on Sunday,” she said. “We can then switch our focus to the Champions League and Continental Cup final in a few weeks time.”

Sunday’s game is Arsenal’s third in a run of six in just 17 days, and Houghton believes squad depth will be an important factor if they are to finish the season strongly.

“We’ve got a really good squad with lots of strength in depth,” she explained. “I’m sure the manager will be utilising the squad as much as possible to make sure players are fresh and to get the right results.”

Away from domestic football, Arsenal are in a great position to reach the next round of the Champions League after an impressive 3-0 win in Barcelona on Wednesday. Houghton, however, is taking nothing for granted.

“The Champions League is a tough competition so we just take it one game at a time," she said. "They’re all really good teams with really good individuals so we try not to look too far ahead.”

After Sunday, the Gunners host Barcelona in the second, before facing Birmingham twice in four days – in the aforementioned Super League clash as well as the Continental Cup final – to finish the domestic season.

Tickets for Arsenal Ladies v Doncaster Rover Belles (kick-off 4.30pm) can be purchased from the gate at Boreham Wood FC, priced £5 adults and £2.50 concessions.
