Boreham Wood have made two new signings on the eve of their National League bow with former Chelsea midfielder Conor Clifford signing and Bristol Rovers' Jamie Lucas arriving on loan.

Clifford, who began his career at Stamford Bridge, spent the final three months of last season on loan at Barnet with another Wood signing, Charlie MacDonald, and helped the Bees win the final Conference title.

The combative midfielder also lists Leicester City and Southend United among his former employers and has also taken in a number of loan stints in the Football League.

Speaking to the club website, Wood boss Ian Allinson enthused: “Conor is obviously a talented boy with a good pedigree. In truth at this stage of pre-season to find a player of his quality available makes it a great signing.

“He’ll go straight into my squad for Saturday and having won the title with Barnet last season will know exactly what to expect when Halifax arrive in town.”

Clifford made 13 appearances for Barnet and head coach Martin Allen had stated his intention to sign the Ireland youth international on a full-time basis after he was released by the Shrimpers.

But a deal did not come to pass and Clifford instead spent time on trial with League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge.

Meanwhile, striker Lucas, 19, arrives at Meadow Park on loan from League Two new-boys Rovers but did not feature as the Gas returned to the Football League at the first attempt via the Conference play-offs.

“I’ve kept tabs on Jamie for a while now and I am grateful to Darrell Clarke, the Bristol Rovers gaffer for his help in making this loan deal happen,” said Allinson.

“Jamie is big, strong and very hardworking. He also has an eye for a goal and will fit in great here. Like Conor Clifford he will go straight into the squad for Saturday’s game and will give me options and great competition for places.”

Lucas has also spent time out on loan at Weston-super-Mare and Gloucester City. He has 13 goals in 18 career league starts.
