Elstree and Borehamwood Green Belt Society has been campaigning against the monstrous rail freight interchange proposed for Park Street on the Radlett airfield site for the last eight years.

Three hundred acres of Green Belt land will be lost forever. All other local conservation groups, Hertfordshire County Council, Hertsmere Borough Council and St Albans City Council are also totally opposed to this hideous imposition.

The news that Helioslough has been granted planning permission appalls us. This shows a cynical disregard for local governance and power to the people, which was a flagship policy of our prime minister. There will certainly be electoral consequences.

The RFI will consist of five huge warehouses with constant overhead lighting from 65ft gantries and 24-hour shiftwork.

Railway sidings and many additional buildings and lorry parks will be needed with a new relief road and rail link.

The noise light and air pollution from the many lorry movements will downgrade the quality of life for the people of Park Street. Diesel fumes are now classed as a threat to lung health from nanoparticles and must impact on the health of Park Street and nearby settlements.

The traffic implications are serious and so is the inevitable disruption of rail services as major alterations to the tunnels will be necessary.

Our roads are already over-congested as the work on Elstree crossroads has demonstrated. Thousands of commuters use First Capital Connect daily and they must be badly affected. Finally, the cost will be astronomic.

We all plead for reconsideration by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government of this damaging project.
