PLANS to develop a £300 million rail freight terminal on Green Belt land near Radlett came under discussion again this week, at a special district council meeting.

The Planning Referrals committee of St Albans District Council composed the plan of action for the public inquiry – which is due to begin on November 24.

Out of the 14 reasons for refusal which have been drawn up in response to developer Helioslough's second application for the Strategic Rail Freight Interchange, the authority will be focusing on some of their main arguments.

Councillors and officers came away from the meeting with a clear view of what their case will be in opposing development plans for the former Radlett aerodrome site in the North Orbital Road.

The proposals include five warehouses with a combined area of 331,655 square metres, with parking for up to 1,602 cars and 617 lorries.

Councillor Chris Brazier, portfolio holder for planning and transportation, said the harm the terminal would have on the Green Belt, on the residential character of the conservation area and on the existing rail network are all main reasons of argument the district council will focus on.
