A Borehamwood radio enthusiast is planning to bring a new sound to the area by launching a community radio station.

Oliver Benson, 31, from Theobald Street, is to front the town’s first dedicated radio station, Borehamwood FM.

As a community radio station, it will be presented and run by people from the area.

Mr Benson said the station has already received support from Elstree Studios, Oaklands College and Hertsmere Leisure. He said: “Borehamwood is one of those places that falls outside all the traditional media coverage areas. It’s just outside London and not covered by the capital’s media but equally not far enough into Hertfordshire.

“Setting up a station exclusively for Borehamwood means we can ensure our news, issues, sport and events are properly covered.”

Mr Benson, who has previously worked in community radio in Edinburgh, believes a community radio station could have been useful to share information this week during adverse weather conditions in the area.

Mr Benson said setting up the station is a “huge task” and he is not yet ready to recruit DJs and presenters.

“What we really need now is a team of people to help the station get to the stage where it can go live, so we really need people interested in project management, fundraising, networking and moving the idea forward.”

Roger Morris, managing director of Elstree Studios, said: “A local radio station for Borehamwood is a great idea and it’s at a time when radio has never been so popular.”

Borehamwood Brookmeadow Councillor Darren Solomons also backs the plan and said a radio station is exactly what the area needs.

He added: “It’ll bring the community together and provide an excellent way for people to learn new skills, as well as provide great entertainment for the town.”

The station is waiting to hear from independent communications regulator, Ofcom, to receive a radio licence to broadcast full-time across the town.
