Cyclists are being warned by police to remain vigilant following a rise in the number of bike thefts across Hertfordshire.
According to a report by Hertfordshire Constabulary, there were 350 such thefts between April and June this year compared with 276 reported in the previous three months - an increase of 28 per cent.
That means on average 116 bikes were stolen each month in the county.
David Mance, crime reduction officer, recommends cyclists always secure their bikes.
He said: "Never leave your bike unlocked, even if you are just popping into a shop for a few minutes. It could save you time and money in the long term."
Police are also appealing to anyone who suspects somebody might be handling stolen bikes to contact them on 0845 33 00 222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
