The gritters have been out in force overnight as Barnet braces for extreme weather following last night’s snow.

Gritting crews have already spread 500 tonnes of grit and salt across Barnet’s roads since November 2016, with more than 1,400 tonnes in reserve.

With road temperatures below zero last night (January 12), Barnet Council has responded to the risk of icy conditions by gritting all routes marked ‘priority one’ and ‘priority two’ across the borough.

Residents have also been asked by the council to grit outside their homes if they are able to do so.

Chair of the environment committee Cllr Dean Cohen said: “Our crews have already been working hard over the Christmas and New Year period to make sure our roads are treated and suitable for travel.

“We will continue to monitor the situation to ensure we are responding appropriately and have enough supplies.”

The council has also asked the public to look out for elderly residents, making sure they are warm enough overnight.

Extreme weather may also affect regular waste collections, so these may be rescheduled if the weather makes routine collections untenable.

If the weather is extremely cold, contents of green bins may partially freeze so the council has said waste collectors will empty out any frozen waste when it has thawed on later collection rounds.
