A brisk winter walk can be just what’s needed to clear the lungs and start getting fit again.

On Saturday, January 28, residents have the chance to join walkers from all over Barnet on a lively stroll through the borough.

As part of Transport for London’s ‘Winter Wanders’ weekend, anyone can take part in a free guided walk from High Barnet to Cockfosters.

The route, taking in views of Canary Wharf and passing through Hadley Manor Field and Monken Hadley Common, sites of the Battle of Barnet, lasts for a healthy two hours and 15 minutes.

It is part of a city-wide initiative from TfL and Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, to make walking safer and easier around the city.

The walk will be led by an experienced guide who will provide historical context and facts to participants.

TfL’s director of surface strategy and planning Ben Plowden said: “Walkers on this route will be taking in some stupendous sights – a beautiful lake and some spectacular views of Canary Wharf, 15 miles away.

“They will be thrilled by the stunning scenery and chilled by the tale of the Battle of Barnet, which took place here in 1471.

“We hope through these free guided walks people will see how easy, quick and enjoyable it can be to get around this vibrant city on foot.

“The walks are the perfect way to start a healthy new year and to explore all London has to offer, so book soon to avoid missing out.”

The High Barnet-to-Cockfosters walk is one of 44 taking place in the capital across the weekend, ranging in distance, time and difficulty.

It starts at 2pm on Saturday, January 28, outside High Barnet tube station, finishing two hours and 15 minutes later at Cockfosters tube station.

Places for any of the walks can be booked here.
