Neighbours say what used to be a “happy and vibrant” area has been plunged into darkness after a man was stabbed in the stomach.

People near Baldock Way, Borehamwood, say they were horrified to learn that a man had been assaulted just before 11.30pm on Friday night.

The man, who is in his 20s, flagged down a passing car and asked for help before paramedics took him to hospital.

People living near the area say that the news has left them fearing for their safety and that of their children.

A mother-of-five said: “I’ve lived in Borehamwood for 30 years and I can honestly say it used to be one of the loveliest places to be.

“But now all that’s changed. It was so happy and vibrant but now it’s just darkness.

“You can’t turn a street corner without flinching or feeling a little bit afraid. That’s not a fair way to live in my opinion.

“What happened to that man is awful – I hope they catch the people who did it.”

Figures from UK Crime Statistics show that violent crime has risen in Borehamwood, with 134 more incidents in 2014 than in 2013.

And while 63 incidents of anti-social behaviour were reported to police in January 2015, there were ten fewer in 2014 with 53.

A grandfather believes that more should be done to launch a children and teenager’s youth club to help keep young people off the streets.

He said: “It’s scary, nowhere is safe anymore. I know there are activities for the children around and that’s great but it’s not enough. We can’t be letting them run riot all the time.

“That’s why people learn bad habits and go on to commit violent crimes.

“I hope that poor lad is alright, it’s really terrifying.”
