An Eastenders star unveiled panels detailing the history of film and television in Elstree and Borehamwood.

Actress Annette Badland, who plays Aunt Babe in the soap opera, whipped the cloth off two new panels outside BBC Elstree Centre, in Eldon Avenue, Borehamwood yesterday.

Film enthusiasts, councillors and representatives from the BBC attended the unveiling of the panels, which tell the story of the former Neptune Studios along with ATV and the BBC Elstree Centre.

Paul Welsh, chairman of Elstree Screen Heritage, who organised the unveiling, remarked that it was fitting that the role of the first studio in the town was commemorated following a busy centenary year.

Hilary Shade spoke of Hertsmere Borough Council’s continuing commitment to the two studios remaining in Borehamwood, while the BBC’s head of history Robert Seatter reminded guests that BBC Elstree should be seen as a source of Borehamwood pride and national identity.

He added: “I look after the story of the BBC, which is not our story but is everyone’s. People have huge associations with the shows, particularly Eastenders, so these things are great because they get people engaged and give people roots into that history.”

Mr Seatter added that the BBC-owned studio, which is currently undergoing construction work to make the set larger, will also feature in a blue plaque trail, along with Television Centre and Broadcasting House.
