A classic car lover from Borehamwood is looking to set up an informal club for likeminded people after splashing out on her own vintage model.

Diane Lee, 53, of Farrant Way, bought a 1970s Vanden Plas Princess last month and wants to share her passion with other motoring fans in the area.

Her recent enthusiasm for vintage vehicles was sparked by her husband, Gordon Lee, 67, who bought his 1966 Singer Gazelle seven years ago.

The couple are already part of the Watford District Classic Vehicle Club and the international Singer Owners’ Club but would like to start a more sociable, relaxed organisation to meet up once a month or more.

They hope to plan regular drives, followed by meals or pub visits, where members can chat about their antique automobiles.

Mrs Lee said: “This is not a club as such - this is a 'meet' for like-minded people. It will be much more informal than other classic car clubs – a chance to meet new people and have fun.”

Mr and Mrs Lee bought their cars fully restored, but still enjoy tinkering and adding new features.

The motorcar maniacs regularly display their classic coupés at local car shows, most recently attending the Classics on the Green fair, in Croxley Green, last weekend.

Although their more mature machines are heavier to manoeuvre, Mrs Lee describes driving them as “much more hands-on”.

She said: “It feels like you’re actually driving, rather than just pushing buttons. It’s a whole other world.

“Many other collectors we meet actually learnt to drive in cars like these or they remember their dads or granddads owning them.

“They ignite a wonderful sense of nostalgia and they allow you to meet some very interesting people.”

Mr Lee added: “Most modern cars are just machines. Our cars are a link to the past - there’s a great sense of keeping the flag flying.”

Anyone living in Radlett or Borehamwood with a keen interest in cars dating from between 1910 to the 1970s, should call Mrs Lee now on 07956 601418.
