Police have launched an appeal for witnesses after an elderly woman was killed in a motorway crash near Radlett.

The accident happened when a green Astra hit a red lorry at around 11pm on Thursday on the eastbound M25 between Junctions 22 and 23.

A passenger in the Astra, a woman in the 80s from Essex, died at the scene.

The driver of the Astra, a man in his 40s from Essex ,was also injured in the crash and taken to Barnet General Hospital where he remains.

Police said his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The drivers of the other vehicles were not injured.

The carriageway was closed for five hours while emergency services dealt with the crash.

PC Martin Longley of the road crash investigation team said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman who sadly died following this collision.

"I am appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or who was travelling along the road and saw the vehicles involved either before during or after the collision to please get in contact."
