The best in bloom went on show at an annual flower festival at the weekend.

The Borehamwood and District Garden Crafts Society (BDGCS) held their annual Festival Flower and Produce Show at Allum Hall Community Centre on Saturday, June 30.

Along with colourful home-grown flowers and vegetables, this year saw the new addition of a variety of stalls selling art, plants, cakes and jewellery.

The show was opened by Cllr Clive Butchins, deputy mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood, and the exhibits were judged by Lawrence Lewis from the Royal Horticultural Society.

Mr Lewis told the green-fingered candidates that he was “very impressed” with the standard of plants displayed this year, considering the bad weather in the past few months.

Several trophies and cups were awarded in categories ranging from fruit to cookery, with presentations made by the Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood, Cllr Charles Kelly.

Multiple award winners included show secretary Len Anderson, who won three awards in the Roses, Pelargonium and Floral Sections, and Jenny Griffiths, who won two awards in the Roses and Floral Art sections.

BDGCS vice chair Rose Barry says the whole day went “very well”, and the society received great feedback from visitors.

The society will hold a number of other events this summer, including a workshop on Thursday, July 26 for parents and pupils on growing plants together at home.
