Concerns have been raised again over a family of swans living in a Borehamwood park, after a cygnet was found dead in the road.

The swans, which are a protected species, have set up home just yards from the busy Brook Road, near Aberford Park.

One concerned reader told Borehamwood and Elstree Times that a young swan was seen lying near a road crossing at the weekend.

Fears for the brood were first raised two weeks ago, when people noticed the family had left the lake and headed for a narrow green strip close to the road.

At the time, Vic Rowntree, who had spotted the swans setting up nest, said: “They are so close to the road and it’s very dangerous. I’m worried because they might accidently step into the road and get run over.

“I just really hope nothing happens to them and they move away from the edge of the road soon.”

Aberford Park is owned by Hertsmere County Council’s Parks Department, but it does not take responsibility for the welfare of any animals living there.

The RSPCA does deal with animal welfare, but has a policy not to interfere with wildlife.

A spokesman from the RSPCA said adult swans tend to stay near water and safe areas, but that it is not unusual for young animals to become injured or killed due to lack of experience or understanding.

If the RSPCA receives enough calls or complaints about the welfare of a particular group of animals, they will endeavour to take action.

Anyone with concerns about the swans or other wildlife can call the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.
