A man who was sentenced to life in prison for strangling his wife to death has spoken of his guilt about the murder in a television documentary.

David Edwards lived in Borehamwood before moving to Bristol with his wife Michaela and two young children in 1996.

The couple married in a catholic church in Borehamwood in 1983 and their two daughters Sara, now 25, and Ruth, 28, grew up in the area.

The 51-year-old was jailed for life in 2008 for the murder of his wife after she admitted to having an affair.

He is currently in Gartree Prison, Leicestershire.

Edwards, who features in the new Channel Four documentary Lifers, spoke last night of his guilt and remorse for committing the crime.

He said: “I think about what I did at least every hour of every single day.”

He spoke of the events which led to the murder in December 2007.

The former civil servant of the Ministry of Defence says he was overcome by a jealous rage when his wife asked for money to go out with a friend.

When he realised this friend was a man and that she was having an affair, she confessed she wanted to be with her new partner.

Edwards admitted that he "got into a state of utter rage, utter irrational thinking."

He added: "I felt a strain on my forearms and looked up and saw my hands around Michaela’s throat. That’s when I realised she was dead."

David immediately called the police and ambulance and said: "I’ve killed my wife. I think she’s dead."

Five years later, Ruth and Sara say they have forgiven their father for the crime.

On the documentary, Ruth explains: “A lot of people will struggle to understand how or why we have forgiven him, but he is like two different people to me.

“The man who did that is not my dad. He’s someone different. He was not in control, and that is how I deal with it.”

The girls still travel 250 miles to visit their father every month.

Edwards, who is studying for a degree in art history in prison, will be able to petition for parole in 2018.

Lifers is repeated on Channel Four tonight at 10pm. It is also available on 4OD at www.channel4.com/programmes/lifers/4od#3374023
