Hertfordshire County Council said it has already had nearly 50 applications with just under three months still to go until June 2 and the landmark anniversary marking the Queen’s 60 years on the throne.

The council said it hoped this year’s celebrations would even overshadow those thrown to mark the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge last spring when more than 300 events took place across the county.

Stuart Pile, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "In 2011 we showed that Hertfordshire residents know how to party, with more than 300 events held to celebrate the royal wedding. It'd be great if we can have a similar number for the Diamond Jubilee.

"There is no charge for closing minor roads for community events so this is a perfect opportunity to get your local community together and celebrate the jubilee in style.

"With both the Jubilee and the Olympics taking place this year, we hope this summer is the season for celebrations in Hertfordshire."

Residents have until May 1 to submit their applications for a street party road closure to Hertfordshire Highways by visiting www.hertsdirect.org/diamondjubilee.

Parties can be held on Sunday 3, Monday 4 or Tuesday 5 June.
