PARENTS in Borehamwood could benefit from a new pilot scheme offering free childcare to youngsters aged two years old.
Hertfordshire County Council was awarded £398,665 by the Government to trial a project, which aims to give children from less privileged backgrounds a better start in life.
In its application, the council used the Cowley Hill ward as one example of 13 different areas in the county that could benefit from the funds. It will now look to distribute the money in these places.
Childcare will be offered to parents through referrals from health workers, preschool leaders and social care teams.
The money will allow County Hall to offer 75 additional places this year, on top of the 272 they already provide.
John Harris, director of children’s services, said: “Hertfordshire County Council welcomes the opportunity to build on previous research and learning in order to support the most disadvantaged families.
“Ensuring that children who live in low income families have access to early education supported by home learning will improve their school readiness.”
