A POLL gauging opinion on the trial switch off of traffic lights at Stirling Corner in Borehamwood has shown a clear majority against the proposals.

Part-time signals at the busy roundabout have been turned off until June 20, at which point Transport for London (TFL) will review data and make a decision whether to permanently remove them.

Over the last few weeks, voting on The Borehamwood & Elstree Times website saw 126 people cast against, while 19 readers favoured the plans.

During this time, more residents have voiced their concerns over the project.

Valerie Neiman, of Holme Park, said: “The traffic lights at Stirling Corner must be re-instated preferably 24 hours a day.

“Are they going to wait until there is an accident? It is horrendous trying to get out onto the A1 roundabout, and the advent of Morrisons has not helped.”

While Ruth Schwartz, from Borehamwood, said: “To stop using the traffic lights is an accident waiting to happen, how many drivers and pedestrians will die or be injured before they are in use again?

“Not only is it now extremely dangerous but journeys now take double the time.

“Whose silly idea was it to experiment with people's lives? Whoever it was, let them use the junction four times a day at peak time.”
