NETWORK Rail has released a video showing the construction of two 70ft platform extensions at Elstree & Borehamwood Station in a single weekend.

The timelapse film shows a team using a new system of pre-fabricated parts, which cut the conventional building time from six months to less than 48 hours.

The works, which were carried out last weekend, will allow longer trains with more seats to stop at the station.

The platforms were extended as part of the £6bn Thameslink Programme to improve services on the line from Bedford to Brighton via central London.

However, longer First Capital Connect trains aren't expected to begin calling at Elstree & Borehamwood Station until December 2018.
