SIXTH formers who did not make their A-level grades today are facing a mad scramble to find university places.

Despite another year of record A-level results celebrations will be on hold for many teenagers who are yet to find a place in higher education.

Only 22,000 places are expected to be on offer in clearing this year - the annual process of matching applicants to university courses.

Although many universities are warning they are already full Hertfordshire University has said it still has places available.

The university, in Hatfield, said its clearing hotline had been extremely busy today with calls from anxious students, but that it was well placed to deal with the demand.

University spokeswoman Ann Bruno said: “We did expect demand to be high this year but we are fully prepared. Our online chat facility and hotline has enabled staff to deal more effectively and efficiently with the high number of enquires during the clearing period.”

The amount of calls received by universities in clearing days is overwhelming. Last year, University of Hertfordshire received 16,000 calls in August and 22,000 in September – numbers likely to increase in the most competitive year yet for the clearing system.
