RESIDENTS are being encouraged to give old furniture a new home this week to help people on a low income by donating the items to charity.

Hertsmere Borough Council has suggested donating sofas, chairs and tables or any other pieces of furniture to The Peace Hospice charity shop in Borehamwood.

Environment portfolio holder, Councillor Jean Heywood, said: "If residents enquire about getting rid of large items of furniture, we will put them in contact with The Peace Hospice which can collect items for free, providing they are in a good, safe condition. "So instead of perfectly good items of furniture getting dumped or thrown into landfill, they'll be sold in the shop and reused by others, who might be on a low income."

Steve Rose, retail director at The Peace Hospice, said: "We are delighted to work with the council. It is so nice to be involved in a project that benefits the community from every angle.

"All money raised in our shops supports The Peace Hospice, which cares for people living with a life limiting or terminal illness and supports their families across Hertsmere."

Residents can take any unwanted items to the shop in Shenley Road or call The Peace Hospice on 020 8953 1985. Electrical items can also be accepted, subject to conditions.
