A WOMAN who lost her wedding ring while feeding ducks in a Borehamwood park has praised council officers for wading through silt to save it.

Marilyn Norman was visiting Aberford Park, in Brook Road, last Friday with her twin sons Jobe and Felix, aged three, having just been to a music class in nearby Fairway Hall.

She lost the Russian wedding ring which she received from husband Gaon in 1998 after throwing bread to ducks in the pond.

She said: "We come to Borehamwood and the music class every week and I always take the boys to a park afterwards. We thought this time it would be nice to go to Aberford and see the ducks.

"We were all throwing the bread into the lake for the ducks but then my ring just flew off my finger and landed straight in the water with the bread.

"I knew immediately it had gone in and I just couldn’t believe it. A wedding ring is so precious and I was just so upset."

Engineering services council officers Tom Butler and Alex Digby were brought out to the scene after a call by Mrs Norman.

Mr Butler said: "We didn’t think there would be much chance in finding it to be honest, because things can move along in the water quickly and easily, but we were happy to give it a go."

At first the officers tried a long pole and switched to a tool which has a scoop on the end, before Mr Butler donned waders and went into the water. With help from passersby who were directing, the ring was found and reunited with its owner.

Mrs Norman said: "I am so grateful. They were fantastic and just kept trying. After about 20 minutes I got it back.

"Jobe and Felix thought it was really amusing and had great fun watching us fish for mummy's ring. It was getting really urgent as I had to get back to pick up my daughter Alex from school and I thought I might not see it again.

"I am so grateful to the two officers and the council for helping me out. I’ve already decided to get the ring altered so it never happens again.”

Mr Digby added: "It's certainly a bit different to what we normally do on a Friday morning, but we were glad to help out and that there was a happy ending."
