Keen gardeners will be encouraging the younger generation to find their green fingers at two annual horticultural shows to be held in September.

The Shenley & District Horticultural Society’s annual show on Saturday, September 13, at Shenley Village Hall, in London Road, Shenley, will this year be encouraging younger people to participate in the event.

Children under 12 years old can enter the Garden on a Dinner Plate category which allows them to use any materials including flowers and vegetables to create a visual image of a garden on a plate.

There is also a cookery competition for children under eight years old. The show also includes adult competitions for vegetables, cookery, flower arranging and photography.

Society secretary Brenda Treacher said: “The show opens at 2.30pm and people are welcome to come along to marvel at the produce, share a cup of tea with friends, bid for exhibits in the auction at the end of the show and maybe win a prize or two in the grand draw.

“Children don’t have to be members of the society or even related to members [to enter the competitions].

“All you have to do is turn up with your entry at the hall by 10.00am on the day of the show and then you can show the adults how to be a winner.”

All entries will receive a prize and the overall winner will receive the Tokonoma Cup donated by the Tokonoma Bonsai Nursery in London Road, Shenley.

The Radlett Horticultural Society annual autumn flower show will be at Newberries Primary School, in Newberries Avenue, Radlett, on Saturday, September 6, between 3.00pm-5.00pm.

The show will have special children’s contests for the best model miniature gardens and gingerbread figures.

Entries for the show are required by Thursday, September 4 by 7.00pm. For more information contact show secretary Bob Clark on 01923 857736 or go online to welcome.to/radlett.hort For more information on the Shenley Horticultural Society annual show call Mrs Treacher on 020 8207 1187.
