A housebuilding company donated more than a tonne of food to a foodbank in the run up to Christmas.

Staff from Taylor Wimpey's Borehamwood branch collected items in November and December before dropping them off at Borehamwood Foodbank.

Established in 2013 and founded by local churches and community groups, Borehamwood Foodbank is open twice a week and supports thousands of people every year with emergency food parcels.

As well as organising emergency food, the group, based at St Teresa's Church, hosts school holiday lunch events, where children can enjoy free healthy school lunches during the holidays, along with activities.

Judith Elders, chairman of Borehamwood Foodbank, said: "We've been overwhelmed by the generosity of the Taylor Wimpey team. The food collected will be put into three-day food packages and shared with people in need in our community.

"Since the foodbank opened eight years ago, we’ve fed over 20,000 people. Sadly the need continues to rise, and we don’t think the situation is likely to change any time soon.

"At a time when many local families are having to choose between feeding themselves and their families and heating their homes, we rely on these donations to help to stop them having to make the terrible choice in these cold, winter months."

Sean Ridley, commercial director for Taylor Wimpey North Thames, added: "We’re really proud to be able to make this donation to Borehamwood Foodbank.

"The work they do across the area is invaluable to those in need, particularly throughout the pandemic and at Christmas time. We’re more than happy to show our support for such an important cause."
