Hundreds of children from Borehamwood learnt about environmental health at a fair last week.

The annual Environmental Health Christmas Fair, run by Hertsmere Borough Council, took place at Borehamwood Village Hall, in Shenley Road, on Friday.

The fair aimed to raise awareness of issues such as noise and air pollution, food safety, promoting healthy eating and keeping fit.

Around 600 children from five primary schools visited the fair throughout the day, getting involved in several activities designed to make education fun.

To highlight the impact of noise, children took it in turns to go into a booth and shout as loud as they could to see how many decibels they could notch up and how it compared with the noise of an aeroplane.

They also saw a selection of birds that were brought to the event to highlight the importance of washing your hands after touching birds and animals.

Council officers were on hand to explain to the best ways to save energy and recycle, with fire and police officers speaking to pupils about staying safe at home and out on the street.

Children were able to enter competitions, with prizes including swimming vouchers and tickets to farms and wildlife parks.

Liz Paffley, health promotion officer, said: "It was a really fun day and all the children looked as though they enjoyed themselves. It's a great opportunity to raise awareness of staying safe and keeping healthy."
