A former pilot took to the skies once again as he boarded a special flight to mark the centenary anniversary of the Royal Air Force.
Colin Drayner, 83, joined he Army Air Corps before serving in the RAF.
Mr Drayner now lives at Bupa Allington Court care home in St Albans.
The care home decided they wanted to surprise Mr Drayner, whose days in the RAF mean so much to him.
So they organised a high-flying adventure in a Cessna 172 which took off from Elstree Aerodrome on May 1.
Mr Drayner was accompanied by Bupa nurse Vijo Martin.
Home manager at the care home, Linda Marks, said: “We know how much Colin’s time in the Air Force meant to him. His face lights up when he talks about flying and planes. We wanted to do something this year in particular, as it is the 100th anniversary of the RAF.”
Mr Martin added: "Colin had an amazing time. I know he loves all things aeroplane related, and even after he left the Air Force he remained a member of the Victory Service Club, attending dinners annually and taking part in social activities.
"We like to give our residents opportunities like this to do things which are special to them – it helps with memory and really raises their spirits.”
Mr Drayner will also be treated to a visit to Hendon Aircraft Museum on May 18.
