The Barnet Market may be making the move to a new site in 2018.

The 800-year-old market maybe making a move from its current site in a private car park at the edge of Chipping Close, High Barnet, to the area neighbouring Waitrose and the bandstand off Stapylton Road.

The hope is that, as discussions have been taking place between Hunter Asset Management and Barnet Council, the bandstand could become the designated area for the market with the transfer being completed in time for the Teenage Market launch in Easter 2018.

Bob Burstow, who is spearheading the teenage market, said of the decision to move the market along with the new teenage market: "There are a lot of threads to be pulled together to create a new market.

"It feels rather like putting on a play or a concert – indeed Joe Barratt – one of the brothers who started the whole organisation – describes Teenage Markets as 'retail theatre'. So let’s get this show on the road!"

With a new H&M store having opened at the end of September, the car park would allow for more traffic flow into Barnet to utilise the new facilities in the area, thus making the move to the bandstand area an "attractive" option.

Christopher Nightingale of the Friends of Barnet Market said: "Moving the market to the bandstand area is attractive to the owners and also could work for the market now that it is quite reduced in size.

"It would be more visible to shoppers which should increase footfall, which is why it has some attraction for the traders. "The Friends of Barnet Market are in favour too, provided that the new site is protected through planning conditions to only be used for market and entertainment activities, and also provided that all reasonable requests from the traders are met."

The Barnet Society has written a blog explaining what they believe should be the conditions for the new site.

They believe the new site should have the same planning protection as its current site, be restricted to market or entertainment use, and have reasonable rents to keep those currently working at the site more likely to stay.

Currently there have not been any official applications to move the market and further details of the potential plans will be made known as they are announced.
