A West Hendon resident has complained that dust from demolition work on her estate has exacerbated her son’s asthma.

Sandra Newman of Bullfinch House NW9, said that demolition work outside her balcony has meant dust has covered her furniture, and has exacerbated hers and her son’s breathing condition.

She said: “My balcony is covered in thick dust and cement. My son and I have had to go to our doctor because we have become unwell, and cannot go onto our balcony because of this.”

Ms Newman also claimed that the demolition work was only covered from the front, meaning those living further off the road have no protection from the debris.

Barratt Homes, the developer currently working on the West Hendon estate, commented to say that measure took place to control dust emissions, including the regular use of water spray cannons to dampen the area.

A spokesperson said: "Barratt London is committed to working with the local community and will continue to work closely with the demolition contractors to minimise the impact of these works as much as possible.

“We encourage residents to get in contact with us if there are any queries or concerns so that they can be addressed.

“There is also an opportunity to talk to the team at our monthly construction forum which has been set up for local residents to find out about upcoming works and ask any construction related questions."

Ms Newman also claimed that there may have been asbestos in the old houses being demolished, however Barratt Homes ensured that if there was any asbestos, it would have been removed before demolition work began.

This comes as the second, two week public inquiry into the regeneration of West Hendon commenced yesterday.
