"Britain and America, though, enjoy very strong economic and military ties, going back generations.

"I am absolutely sure these will endure and we will be able to work with Mr Trump as America's democratically elected leader.

"He has suggested a willingness to engage with the UK as an ally and a desire to reach a trade deal with us, which is promising.

"Much more worrying has been his apparent lack of commitment to NATO.

"This has been the cornerstone of Western security since the war and I sincerely hope he reconsiders his position now he is President."

In January, more than 70,000 people signed a petition calling on the Government to stop Mr Trump coming into the country.
