Hundreds of people have vented their anger about congestion throughout Borehamwood.

Disgruntled drivers are losing patience as traffic jams around the roundabout near Elstree and Borehamwood train station gets worse.

Maxine Steinberg, 51, of Thornbury Gardens, Borehamwood, says more and more drivers approaching from Shenley Road, Station Road, Theobald Street and Allum Lane, are forcing their way onto the roundabout.

She said: “It’s a death-trap. There is going to be a really bad accident.

“Nobody seems to be doing anything about the roundabout near the station.

“No one is stopping at the roundabout and if you do stop to follow the Highway Code then you are stuck there forever.

“You have to have eyes everywhere when you are trying to cross it. I worry about elderly and inexperienced drivers. They don’t have a chance.

“Hertfordshire County Council don’t really seem to care because it doesn’t affect them. There is only one solution, which is a four-way traffic lights system.”

According to Mrs Steinberg, it now takes her around 40 minutes to make a 10-minute journey to her workplace opposite the station.

Mr Steinberg says she has seen at least two bus crashes because of the way people are parking in Station Road - despite it being double yellow lines - in order to pick up their friends or family from the train station now.

This causes the other drivers, including buses, to go onto the opposite side of the road which in turn makes the congestion even worse, she says.

Borehamwood Town Mayor and borough councillor Richard Butler said: “I am experiencing the same issues as everyone else.

“I am not happy with it as well. I know the council has started looking at this issue. It needs to be dealt with now.”

Mayor Cllr Butler has suggested that Hertsmere Borough Council and Hertfordshire County Council need to discuss the problems at the junction before a serious accident happens.

Hertfordshire County Council says the county's road network is the second busiest outside London, according to the council.

Andrew Dawson, from Hertfordshire County Council, said: “Our innovative Integrated Transport Control Centre uses the latest technology to manage traffic and travel across the county and co-ordinate more than 55,000 road maintenance repair jobs a year.

“It monitors any unusual congestion or incidents on our roads which affect normal traffic flow and can take action such as changing traffic light timings if necessary to ease congestion in a particular area."

“However, at peak times such as rush hour in busy areas there will inevitably be some traffic due to the sheer volume of motorists.”
