Gym goers in St Albans have raised £1,800 for a charity that matches potential blood stem cell and bone marrow donors with people in need of life-saving transplants.

Users of the Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre raised the funds for the Anthony Nolan Trust during a month long campaign.

Members, guests and staff were encouraged to join in a series of events including group exercises in the pool and gym.

A different physical activity was held each week such as a ‘swim around the world' challenge, a table tennis tournament and a staff rounders match. There was also a comedy night and several raffles.

Cllr Annie Brewster, who is responsible for Sports, Leisure and Heritage at St Albans City and District Council, who run the centre in partnership with Everyone Active, said: "This was a great effort by everyone involved at Westminster Lodge.

"It was an opportunity for people to have some fun, try out new exercises and raise money for a vital cause. I am delighted with the excellent response it had."

Steve Cox, contract manager for Everyone Active, said: "The Anthony Nolan Trust is a charity very close to our hearts.

"We are extremely proud of our efforts in St Albans to raise money for those suffering from blood disease and their families."
