Children who don't like snakes could scream as loud as they wanted at an event to promote environmental health.

Topics from beekeeping, and animal welfare to first, aid, emergency planning and food hygiene were covered at Hertsmere Borough Council environmental health department's Christmas fair on Thursday.

In one activity to highlight the issue of noise pollution, children could have their shouting measured in a specially-made Santa’s secret noise grotto.

With presentations from groups including the National Works TV and Film unit, pupils also had the chance to handle snakes and other reptiles.

Schools from across Borehamwood were invited, with pupils from Cowley Hill, Kenilworth, Meryfield, Monksmead, St Teresa’s, Summerswood and Woodlands meeting police, firefighters and St John Ambulance staff.

Councillor Jean Heywood, responsible for environmental health, said: “This is always a great day for children as well as staff who enjoy showing the youngsters how environmental health impacts on their lives.

“It’s vital that children know the importance of staying safe and healthy at home, and out and about, and how to help preserve their environment.

“Thank you to everyone who helped to make the day such a success and all the schools that took part.”
