Hundreds of people fell silent as they paid their respects on Sunday at an event to mark Remembrance Day.

Crowds surrounded the Borehamwood war memorial on Sunday morning to observe the traditional two minute’s silence in remembrance of the men and women who have given their lives in the two world wars, and subsequent conflicts.

The 1372 Elstree and Borehamwood Air band led the town’s military parade from Clarendon road to the remembrance memorial service at the war memorial, opposite the civic offices, for the two minutes silence.

Cadets then led the parade and the public back along the high street for a special service of remembrance at All Saints church, in Shenley road.

Cadet instructor Geoff Parker said: “Some of the cadets had only started learning the instruments they played since joining in the last few months.

“The squadron’s commanding officer Pilot Officer Stacey Murphy also took part in the salute at the War Memorial as well as marching in the band, and the cadets were also out and about on Saturday assisting the Royal British legion in poppy collecting in the town centre.”

Twin town association member Andrew Grady played the last post at the service by the war memorial, while Victor Eni laid a wreath on behalf of the twin town Fontenay-aux-Roses.

The event was also attended by Elstree and Borehamwood town council mayor cllr Pat Strack, along with leader of Hertsmere Borough Council cllr Morris Bright.

Members of the public were later invited back to the British Legion club, in Shenley Road, for drinks and a buffet as part of a mini open day.

British Legion chairman Fred Grimes said: “The crowds were phenomenal. Everything went well and I was very impressed with the turnout on the day.

“From Clarendon Road down to the memorial, there was a good crowd with people lining the streets and the church service was packed.

“All the immediate responses I had from people who had come down to pay their respects were that everyone really enjoyed it and it was a good event.”
