Rage against the potholes in Aycliffe Road, Borehamwood

Lawrence Stack has painted the potholes in yellow paint

The potholes are 'as big as craters' according to motorists

Angry motorists are calling for action over potholes which they say are “as big as craters” and causing the roads to disintegrate.

Drivers have taken it upon themselves to paint yellow circles around the potholes in Aycliffe Road, Borehamwood, to warn others.

Hertfordshire County Council’s contractor Ringway is responsible for repairing roads, but despite the holes having appeared over a year ago, nothing has been done.

Paul Statham, of Aycliffe Road, said: “This street is only fit for Sherman tanks and horses and carts - it is too dangerous for anything else.

“It is damaging people's cars, it’s like an obstacle course out there and it is morally not fair. There is only so much cars can take.

“The road is totally worn away and disintegrating. The whole area is going down the chute.”

This year was the wettest winter on record, which has caused the roads to crumble and left cars with broken spores, punctured tyres and buckled wheels.

Lawrence Stack, of Croxdale Road, bought a can of yellow paint and spent a day navigating through the traffic to spray the “lethal” holes.

He said: “People risk so much when they come out here, it’s appalling. Some of the potholes have been repaired but it’s just a quick fix, and they’re coming apart again.

“It’s a disgrace.”

They also claim the mini roundabout at the junction with Allerton Road has worn away and the uneven surface is now dangerous for drivers.

Labour councillor Ernie Butler, who represents the Cowley Hill ward, said: “It’s unrecognizable as a roundabout now. It’s waring away and could cause a serious accident.

“I’ve spoken to driving instructors who are left scratching their heads as to how they’re meant to teach people to drive when the the road is full of lumps and bumps.

“These holes are as big as craters.”

Borehamwood north councillor Leon Reefe, a Labour representative, says the work was supposed to be carried out in March - but work has now been delayed to May.

He said: “The roads are in such a state, and it’s a disgrace. Soon they will be back to the 19th Century standards.

“I have been pressing the issue at county and will continue to do so, because until something serious happens, nobody is going to take notice.”

A statement from Hertfordshire County Council said: “Despite regular maintenance of drains, the sheer volume of water together with lower temperatures has inevitably resulted in some flooding and damage.

“We are prioritising repairs to ensure damage assessed as requiring an emergency response is fixed straight away, and that other repairs are done in the most efficient way possible.”

Matt Kelley, Ringway divisional manager said: “We are aware of the potholes on Aycliffe Road, we have carried out a number of pothole repairs on those which were deemed to be dangerous.

"These temporary repairs are implemented to protect the travelling public until such time as we can arrange roads pace to undertake a resurfacing scheme on the road, hopefully in the next two months.  “

Every council will have been challenged to keep up with repairs over the last very wet winter but much of Hertsmere's issues are due to previous neglect or bad workmanship.
It's very noticeable when coming from neighbouring boroughs into Hertsmere that we definitely have the worst roads in comparison and no manner of excuses from the council can disguise that.
I've also noticed things reported to the Highways website seem to take an age to repair, including the large number of faulty lights along the shopping stretch of Shenley Road.
So come on councillors, get the budgets sorted so Hertsmere and Herts Highways can fix these issues without excuses.

The potholes in and around the Aycliffe Road areas are similar to the highway disrepair being encountered by motorists throughout Boreham Wood and indeed the whole of Hertsmere.
The initiative of Lawrence Stack and others on behalf of the majority who live within the community is highly commendable and deserves a more positive response from both Labour Councillor Ernie Butler and Labour County Councillor Leon Reefe.
The commiseration expressed by Councillor Butler in agreeing with the complaints of the residents is hardly the response the residents are entitled to expect from a paid representative.
What action has Councillor Butler taken in putting done resolutions during meetings of the full Council demanding that a programme of remedial works of repairs prioritising areas of the highway in Boreham Wood most in need of attention be made public?
Following the failure of the authorities in implementing this programme of repairs will he then demand that Conservative controlled Hertsmere Borough Council then register a formal complaint with the appropriate Minister of Crown against 'big brother' Conservative dominated Hertfordshire County Council for highway maintenance dereliction and 'Duty of Care' neglect?
This is the least the residents have the right to expect while Councillor Butler collects approximately six thousand pounds each year for doing what?--attending meetings.
Meanwhile, our still 'wet behind the ears' County Councillor Leon Reefe has nothing to offer the residents other than similar comments of commiseration about the disrepair of the road with the historical observation that: 'Soon we will be back to 19th Century standards' while he also collects approximately twelve thousand pounds for doing what?--attending meetings.
The added observation from Councillor Reefe: ' Because until something serious happens nobody is going to take notice' appears to be the end of his contribution?
This philosophical rendition of ' thought for today ' when translated for the benefit of us residents appears to indicate that until fatalities and injuries are sustained nothing will be done, is hardly the comfort and reassurance residents have the right to expect from their elected representative?
Why has Councillor Reefe who is part of the very Council which is responsible for the preparation of the programme of prevention and cyclical maintenance of Boreham Wood and Hertsmere's highways not demanded action by threatening also to make representation to the appropriate Minister of The Crown and then making this public?
Lawrence Stack and the other resident volunteers of the community have done more in a few hours to expose this shameful neglect by the County Council with the passive approval of Hertsmere Borough Council, and as a consequence have added credence to any claims submitted by motorists where damage is sustained to their vehicles, than these two paid Councillors have exhibited during their entire year of office?

Unfortunately we have a Labour Councillor, Richard Butler who also collects approximately six thousand pounds a year for doing what?--attending meetings.
Councillor Butler similar to his Labours contemporaries who represent Aycliffe Road has done nothing about the potholes and the disrepairs?
Councillor Butler has instead spent his time with the former Chairman of Boreham Wood and Shenley Labour Party, Jon Galliers in promoting, printing and distributing leaflets around the community attacking UKIP on their policies, none of which are contained in the 2013 Election Manifesto.
Evidently Councillor Butler cares more about scoring party political points than applying himself to the task of dealing with the concerns and complaints of those he gets paid to represent.

Despite some rather ill informed & silly comments from some quarters, I am happy to report that a date has now been fixed for the works on Aycliffe road to commence. Ringway (the Contractors) have today promised that the work with start on May 12 and will last for 5 days. There will be diversions during the 5 days. For info on this go to the Hertscc website.

Not only was it because of my representations, but also my colleagues, Cllrs Ernie and Richard Butler and Ann Harrison who all helped with the pressure. Also I must mention all the work done on this and other issues by Laurence Stack and David Burcombe as well as Paul Statham.

Residents can be assured that I will be making sure that we are not let down again by the Contractors on this issue.

Well that is a revelation from Labour County Councillor Leon Reefe?
Now we are aware that all you have to do is complain to both your County Councillor and Labour Hertsmere Borough Councillor, Ernie Butler and suddenly Conservative controlled Hertfordshire County Council under pressure from this dynamic duo then reschedule their entire highway maintenance and repairs programme to include Aycliffe Road?
However, Ringway the Contractor with agreement of the County Council had prepared their programme of works for highway repairs which included Aycliffe Road six weeks ago, long before even Lawrence Stack and other residents complained which was then two weeks before the dynamic duo became involved.
Meanwhile, back in the County Council in Hertford the elected members, including I trust Councillor Reefe are today debating a motion by Liberal Democrats Councillors at a full meeting of the Council: ' arguing that taxpayers are not getting value for money' from the services currently being provided by Ringway?
One of the main reasons for this motion is that : ' Works are constantly being postponed.'
Therefore, this then become's a ' wait and see.'
However, if any congratulating are in order these without any further consideration must be attributed to the efforts of Lawrence Stack and the other residents of that area who without the financial incentive of six thousand pounds a year responded to the needs and concern of their community--well done.

Questions remain unanswered for residents of Kenilworth Ward, following the on-line comments and revelation by Labour County Councillor, Leon Reefe that Labour Hertsmere Borough Councillor, Richard Butler assisted in the pothole repairs to Aycliffe Road.
Why is Councillor Richard Butler volunteering his services to the residents of that area when we have potholes needing to be repaired in Keniliworth Ward?
Maybe Councillor Butler has become concerned that as he is required to seek re-election next year when the entire Council retires, his future as the representative of Kenilworth Ward may come to an abrupt end and the laying a foundation in Cowley Ward may be a prudent investment?

Because, and as he well knows but coneniemtly forgets to mention in his really silly polititical games, Borehamwood South which Kenilworth is part of, has a Tory Cllr, and a friend of Mr Ward, by the name of Cllr Rabbi Alan Plancey. So if there are potholes in Borehamwood South he is the person for Mr Ward to go to. Although he may have trouble as his county Councillor and his erstwhile pal reckons that all the potholes are repaired. He also reckoned a few years ago that if the potholes were large motorists should "drive around them". Now there's a thought.

Just a further thought, my colleague Richard Butler is also a Town Councillor for Cowley Hill ward, part of Borehamwood North, so has not only a right to help with issues but has a duty to do so. Something that is obviously lacking in Mr Ward's information output. Wonder why? He really needs to stop playing these silly personalised political games!!

One stating he has been in power for 25 odd years, and how things are always actioned, but yet in 25 years the pothole problem (amongst others) have got worse. - Where's your action there Frank?

As for Leon Reefe, your nearly as bad, responding to the name calling and point scoring by doing virtually the same.

No wonder Borehamwood is in such a mess, with you lot and Sandra Parnell who can't even spell let alone make informed decisions.

In the last 30 years, I have seen Borehamwood go further and further down the tubes. Immigration from all angles, lack of housing, schools being closed down, no jobs, potholes, crime and drugs. - The police station is always closed, there are no patrols anywhere and the place looks run down and uncared for.

You all accuse each other of soaking up cash allowances and not doing much else. well your all as bad as each other, as NOTHING ever changes around Borehamwood apart from all these new flats everywhere.

I was an elected Labour member of Hertsmere Borough Council for a period of nearly twenty five year which ended in 2006.
During that period of service I always 'got things done'.
Anybody who has lived in Boreham Wood for the previous thirty years and and needed my help or read the Boreham wood Times is aware of my service to the community.
However, many of the present elected members are only on the Council for the six thousand pounds they collect each year for attending meetings.
How many of the elected members or their predecessors took Hertsmere Borough Council to Court on charges of injustice or failing to discharge their duty of care for the health of people in the community?
During my period of service I took Hertsmere Borough Council to the High Court twice on 'women's rights' on housing and won. Barnet Magistrates Court to remove Asbestos from Council homes which was also won.
This is what service to the community is all about not attending 'talking shops' and then when people ask you for help, tell them it must be in writing or to contact the Council Officers first then come back to them.

Th majority are now aware the programme for the work of repairs that included Aycliffe Road was prepared by Ringways the contractor and agreed with the Highway Engineers of Hertfordshire County Council six weeks ago, long before Councillor Reefe responded to the growing anger and public criticism from the residents.
The legality of the right and influence of any elected Councillor, simply to contact the County Council and demand that their area is then included
on a programme of repair in preference to other areas when the Councillor has no professional qualifications or even the authority to make any assessment or condition survey of the road surface is to bizarre and remote even to discuss?
With reference to the comment that I am a pal of Conservative County Councillor Alan Plancey may only be dismissed as: ' 'The enemy of my enemy is my friend. ' Think about it !
