POLL: Teachers to go on strike across Hertfordshire

Thousands of schoolchildren could have the day off as teachers prepare to take strike action.

Teachers have forced a shutdown of schools across Hertfordshire, with a one day walk out over pay, pensions and working conditions on Wednesday, March 26.

It is not yet known which schools in Borehamwood will be shut, though parents are urged to speak to their children’s schools directly.

Chris Hayward, cabinet member for enterprise at Hertfordshire County Council, urged as many schools as possible to stay open for the day.

He added: “We recognise there are strongly held feelings on both sides of this national dispute, but strike action in a key public service can only be to the detriment of parents and children.

“The decision to stay open or to close is for individual school headteachers and governors to make. We do not have any authority to compel schools to stay open.

“If school leaders decide to close their doors, we have advised them to inform parents and carers as soon as possible in advance, so that they can make alternative arrangements for their children."

Anna Slater, have you asked any of the teaching unions why they feel that strike action is necessary?

Probably as the teachers feel entitled to more, however they perform. There is nothing wrong with rewarding those who achieve and weeding out those who don't. This could only happen in the public sector.

I think the union should publish there reasons for striking to the public, I and thousands of other teachers understand the problems and why and they are dead right to strike but I think the unions could do more of a campaign towards everyone else so they too can see why we are doing this !

I could comment on my seven years working in a school.
But I won't.
Haters gonna hate, likers gonna like.
Besides, we have TFEB commenting :) do we need any more?
Teachers can only do so much, parents need to rise up and get their acts together.
When a parent complains that their child is missing art coursework to do extra literacy, and then complains because child fails their English Mock, what can you do?
