Mattresses, furniture and a fridge were among items rescued from a Borehamwood street.

Hertsmere’s Community Safety Partnership was out in force this week to make Shenley Road a cleaner, safer place to live and work during an environmental day of action.

Council officers in charge of waste services, environmental health and housing visited 48 houses to talk to them about waste management and housing issues.

Representatives from Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Services called at 82 businesses to ensure they were obeying fire safety law.

Eight houses were found not to have smoke detectors and their landlords were contacted.

Officers and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) from the Borehamwood Safer Neighbourhood Team were also on hand to offer crime prevention advice and to discuss crime and anti-social behaviour in the area.

Councillor Charles Goldstein, who is in charge of community safety, said: “These environmental action days provide a good opportunity for the Community Safety Partnership to focus on a specific area and work together with residents and businesses to make it cleaner and safer, encouraging everyone to take pride in their community.”

PCSO Chris Messetter from the Borehamwood Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “It was an excellent opportunity to further increase our visibility by letting residents know we are here to help.”
