A new museum opening in Borehamwood will be an “exciting” development for the town.

Elstree and Borehamwood Museum is set to relocate to the “state of the art” library and community centre at 96 Shenley Road on November 18.

Although the new facility will be the same size as the previous one in Drayton Road, project manager David Armitage expects it to offer a very different experience.

Mr Armitage, who was the right-hand man of the curator of the Drayton Road museum Alan Lawrence, said: “The current museum tends to attract people who are 55 and older and come to reminisce about their early life in the town.

“The new museum in Shenley Road will be very different. We want to attract a much younger crowd of people.”

The new museum will share the same opening hours as the library, meaning the public can visit all day on Monday and Wednesday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoon and Saturday from 9am until 4pm.

One wall of the museum will contain an interactive display, in association with Elstree Screen Heritage, with two screens featuring film clips and interviews with actors and people who have worked at the town’s film studios.

The rest of the museum will feature a Borehamwood timeline and objects and displays detailing the town’s history, as well as room for temporary exhibitions.

The museum was awarded £98,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and £70,000 from Hertsmere Borough Council earlier this year to enable it to become a modern, professional museum with exhibitions and displays that will appeal to visitors of every age.

In order to make it more child-friendly, the museum is having a “touchy feely” box specially made for it.

The box will contain objects linked to the town’s history such as a model of one of the buses featured in Cliff Richard’s Summer Holiday, which was filmed at Elstree Studios.

Mr Armitage said: “The box will help us engage more directly with children and help make the town’s history come alive for them.”

The new museum has already attracted 24 volunteers who will work on the museum floor and in back room roles

However it is still seeking more people who are willing to give their time, particularly those who have social media expertise to help promote the musuem and its exhibitions.

Mr Armitage added: “This is a very challenging time for us, but an exciting one. We have been working towards this move for a long time and I can’t wait for the new museum to open.”
