There are “exciting times ahead” for the Leeming and Aycliffe areas as a community centre prepares to finally spend a £1million grant.

People from the Big Local Shop, in Leeming Road, Borehamwood, have spent nearly two years deciding how the National Lottery grant should be spent to help revive the area.

After a year of consulting with residents, they say the first stage of the project will be launched in May.

Donna Inwood, chairwoman of the Big Local project, said: “For months residents will have been hearing about this money but won’t really know much about it.

“I am pleased all our hard work has finally paid off and now the community will finally be able to benefit from the grant.

“It is going to be such a great thing for the area. There are exciting times ahead.”

During the consultation period, which ended in October, six areas of need were identified – families, youth, over 55s, minorities, health and education.

As a result, this year money from the grant will go towards providing organised day trips for single parents and their children.

The money was earmarked for two neighbourhoods in the Cowley Hill ward, after it was identified as one of England's most disadvantaged areas.

People have been found to lack confidence and motivation when it comes to finding a job, so special workshops will be held.

The grant may also be used to help families pay off debt by providing them with an interest-free loan as well as helping them save for the future.

Shenley Road resident Ms Inwood added: “I also hope to launch parenting classes with a unique spin, where a supernanny comes to observe children in their own home.

“There is still a lot of work to do but I want people to know where we are at with the project.

“Watch this space.”
