'This is a fantastic opportunity' - electronic books boost children's reading in Borehamwood

Teachers are celebrating after receiving a grant for electronic books they say help boost children’s enthusiasm for reading.

Hertswood School in Thrift Farm Lane, Borehamwood, has been awarded £1,500 from Hertfordshire County Council to buy ten new Kindle Fires.

Teacher Laura Edgar said: “Kindles are really good for children who are already readers and research shows it’s pretty effective with getting boys to read far more.

“The equipment is incredibly expensive so this is a fantastic opportunity for us.”

The new devices will enable the school to start an electronic book group aimed at boys. The school already has a number of Kindles which have led to a significant increase in the number of boys visiting the library and reading for pleasure.

The funding will also help replace Hertswood's aging set of play scripts, which students read out loud in small groups.

What an excellent idea. Boys might be encouraged to read more if the book is downloaded on to a Kindle.
