The secret of the Motown sound
Fabulous harmonies and high-class performances were what Motown was all about and now audiences can relive the excitement of the era with The Magic of Motown at the Watford Colosseum this weekend.
Between 1961 and 1971 Motown Records recorded 110 top ten hits. The Magic of Motown charts the label’s entire history, from this golden period in its history to being heralded as the world’s greatest record label.
Discover the secret of that unique Detroit sound through smash hits such as Stop in the Name of Love, Signed, Sealed, Delivered, My Guy, Heard it Through the Grapevine, Why Do Fools Fall in Love?, plus many more.
“This year is a very special one as far as Motown is concerned,” says producer Michael Taylor. “It marks 50 years of number one hits from the world’s favourite record label.”
Male lead and choreographer Andre Lejaune says that the cast has spent the end of 2011 rehearsing an all-new arena show to celebrate this golden anniversary.
“With many new numbers added to our already hit-packed show we needed to ensure the choreography was right on point.
“Sixties classics give way to present-day masterpieces from Lionel Richie and Diana Ross,” says Michael.
Featuring slick male harmonies and stunning female vocals, the production honours The Temptations, Diana Ross, The Four Tops, Stevie Wonder and many more Tamla Motown legends.
“Sadly, many of the original Motown legends are either no longer with us or longer touring,” says Andre.
“Our young cast is able to reflect the exuberance and excitement of these songs as they were originally performed.”
Equal care is taken to reproduce the original look of the Motown stars on stage. It was not just the music that set Berry Gordy Jnr signings apart from all the other hit singers of the time.
“And with dozens of costume changes shoe-horned into each show,“ says Andre, “at times there can be just as much going on backstage as there is under the spotlights.”
The Magic of Motown authentically brings to life all the hit songs of the era in a show celebrating the world’s most popular record label.
“The guys have been together for some time now,” says Andre, “and we tour the world with our show.
“However, we know all about the British concert scene – our first break was a gig at Butlins, Skegness.”
Today The Magic of Motown concert show is playing stadium-style gigs across the UK.
“We still rehearse once a week – making sure our moves are on point and harmonies spot on,” says Andre. “We’d never want to let an audience down.”
The Magic of Motown comes to Watford Colosseum, Rickmansworth Road, Watford on Friday, February 10 at 8pm.
