Herts Centenary Trophy quarter-final


This was a lively cup tie from the start and in the first few minutes, Star keeper Lee Chandler pulled off a stupendous full-length save.

Sandridge began to dominate, and defender Rob Pringle needed to be at his best to halt the visitors' centre-forward.

Sandridge scored in the 26th minute, after the Star defence failed to clear their lines..

Disappointed, the Star lads soon picked themselves up. Tommy Armitt put a superb ball through the Sandridge defensive ranks and the keeper managed to get to the ball just before dashing Burrows.

Soon after, Star were awarded a free-kick 30 yards from the Sandridge goal. The shot was charged down and cleared. By the time the whistle blew for half-time, it was clear that Star were playing second fiddle to the energetic Sandridge side.

In the second half, Sandridge carried on as before, dictating play. Star were more fired up but unable to create.

After 55 minutes, Star defender Matt Howard was replaced by young attacker Jamie Hazell in a bid to add impetus up front. And it started to pay off as Star began to move up. Jamie Mckinnie made a superb run on the right which saw his cross taken off the heads of leaping legs by the Sandridge keeper.

Chandler made another superb save to keep Star in the game.

Jamie Hazell made a run and slipped the ball to the darting Burrows, but the keeper saved at his feet.

A minute later, Burrows was in on goal and brought down in the box, but the referee waved play on.

Sandridge then had two shots with in a minute which flew past the woodwork.

The crowd egged Star on, and shots and headers threatened the Sandridge goal, but they just could not put the ball in the net. Towards the end of the game, Star had come alive, but Sandridge held on for a hard-fought win.
