Boreham Wood have made a promising start to their pre-season campaign with four wins and a draw.
The Wood narrowly missed out on promotion to the Football League for the first time in their history last term, losing to Rochdale on penalties in the play-off final, but have set their sights on going one better this season.
They kicked off with the visit of Sky Bet Championship side Watford in Alessio Dionisi’s first game in the dugout. Tom White deservedly broke the deadlock inside 20 minutes before the Hornets drew level courtesy of Mamadou Doumbia ten minutes into the second period. A hard-fought contest in the Hertfordshire sunshine was decided by a sublime strike from Trialist D from distance as the Wood secured a 2-1 win.
A trip to Southern League Premier Division Central outfit Real Bedford followed as the two teams locked horns for the first time. An emphatic 8-2 victory ensued despite the Pirates taking a first-half lead, which included Matt Rush netting a hat-trick and new signing Tarryn Allarakhia netting a brace.
Last season’s National League Cup winners returned to Meadow Park with Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur youth sides heading to Meadow Park.
The Gunners were on top throughout but it was Marley Marshall-Miranda who got off the mark for the season with 69 minutes on the clock. In a game in which Arsenal fielded a handful of young stars on the periphery of the first-team including Andre Harriman-Annous, they deservedly ensured it ended honours even thanks to Bowen Philips’ goal six minutes from time.
The Wood’s clash with Spurs came four days later and the North Londoners took the initiative just after the half-hour mark with Mason Melia’s strike from close range. However, Lewis Richardson drew level one minute after the break before Luke Norris netted the decisive goal to seal a 2-1 win.
Last time out, they headed to Dagenham & Redbridge and produced a dominant display to run out as 2-1 victors with Zak Brunt and Richardson on the scoresheet as Archie Tamplin netted a late strike which proved merely a consolation.
They host Norwich City U21’s in their final pre-season clash on Friday ahead of their league curtain-raiser against Tamworth.
