Boreham Wood crashed out of the FA Trophy on Saturday, losing 1-0 to National League North side Blyth Spartans.

Dan Maguire’s first-half goal was all that separated the sides as Luke Garrard made four changes from the side that drew with Dagenham & Redbridge.

Maguire had the first sight of goal for the hosts after being fed through by Robbie Dale after he won the ball in the centre of the pitch but the goal-scorer planted his effort well wide of the far post.

Sorba Thomas, replacing Sean Shields in the line-up, responded for the visitors, stretching the home defence down the left before his cross was over-hit and missed by the on-rushing Idris Kanu.

Kanu, on loan from Peterborough United, then broke free down the wing himself and crossed towards Thomas, whose header back across goal was cleared only as far as Mark Ricketts, but he volleyed over.

For all of Wood’s pressure, it was the sixth-tier side that took the lead just before the half-hour mark. Maguire beat Jamal Fyfield and Femi Ilesanmi to a lofted ball over the top by Connor Oliver and, once he had it under control, he turned and fired past Fred Burbidge for his 150th Spartans goal.

Danny Woodards had the away side’s first opportunity of the second half, but his diving header from Thomas’ corner was comfortably gathered by Peter Jameson.

Spartans came back with two efforts of their own though, firstly seeing Oliver’s long-range effort parried away by Burbidge and then the Wood stopper was on hand to make a fine save at the feet of substitute Bradley Fewster.

In a late search for an equaliser, Woodards sent a dangerous low ball into the area but it was just too long and narrowly evaded the on-rushing Thomas.

It wasn’t to be for Wood, and Blyth held on for another cup win that sees them into the last 16 of the competition where they will face National League leaders Leyton Orient away from home.
