A dominant Boreham Wood made light work of Sutton United as they thrashed their National League rivals 4-0 to climb into the play-off places.

With the sides separated by just three points heading into the game, it looked likely the game at Gander Green Lane would be a tight one.

However, Wood came out of the blocks at frightening pace and were two up with six minutes on the clock thanks to goals from Angelo Balanta and Kieran Murtagh.

The opener saw Balanta turn in from a pinpoint Ricky Shakes pull back while Murtagh somehow managed to loop a header home from outside the box.

Wood all but killed the game as a contest with 23 minutes on the clock When Justin Shaibu powered through the heart of the Sutton defence and slotted home.

Wood remained firmly in the ascendency and scored a fourth goal with eight minutes of the second period played when Joshua Umerah got in on the act.

Again Shaibu was involved, poking a cross into the path of his team-mate who did well to force a finish under the despairing United keeper.

From then on Wood were able to sit back and they played out the remainder of the game in relative comfort to secure a clean sheet.

The win saw Wood make it six league games on the spin without defeat and came on the back of a 1-1 draw with Barrow in dramatic fashion on Saturday.

Barrow looked to have snatched all three points when they took an 81st minute lead thanks to John Rooney's strike.

However, Wood refused to back down and pushed hard for a leveller which arrived in the fourth minute of added time thanks to a Murtagh effort.

Luke Garrard's men will look to continue their fine run of form when they take on Salford City on the road on Saturday.
