Ellie Baker produced a fine performance at the European Under-20 Athletics Championships on Saturday as she won 800m silver.

The Cowley Hill athlete’s effort ensured Great Britain claimed both first and second spot in the event, which took place in Grosseto Italy.

She ran a time of 2.07.01 to finish as runner up to Khahisa Mhlanga, who completed the final in 2.06.96.

Gabriele Gajanova completed the top three, claiming the bronze medal with a time of 2.07.15.

The top two were, perhaps, no surprise as Baker and Mhlanga ran the two quickest times in qualifying.

Baker, 19, won her heat in a time of 2.08.90 to finish ahead of Jana Reinert (2.09.00) in second and third place Holm Helene Gottlieb (2.09.62).

Mhlanga was marginally quicker in her heat and came home in 2.08.47.

Baker’s display helped contribute to Britain leaving the competition with more medals than any other team at the event as they took home a total of 19.

They did, however, finish second in the overall medal table due to the fact Germany won five gold and seven silver medals to Britain’s five and six.
