Two goals in as many minutes were enough for Dover Athletic to come from behind and seal a 2-1 Bank Holiday win over Boreham Wood.
Two crosses and two headed goals gave the home side the advantage after Harry Crawford's opener. The result was decided after 16 minutes of the game starting, with all three goals coming in a frantic nine-minute spell.
Ian Allinson made four changes to the starting line-up, opting for a 4-4-2 formation in an attempt to counteract Dover's three forwards.
Wood started the game lethargically and Preston Edwards had to save his side with a fine stop, rushing out and block Stefan Payne's shot after just three minutes.
Two minutes later Ricky Miller again supplied Payne, who burst through on goal. This time Danny Woodards made the saving block.
Against the run of play Wood took the lead after eight minutes with an inspired piece of play.
A free-kick was given away fully 35 yards from goal. Conor Clifford surprised Dover goalkeeper Mitch Walker by going for goal. Walker could only parry the low drive, allowing Crawford to rush in and steer the loose ball home.
It was a superb poacher's goal from the ex-Dartford striker who now is now the Wood's leading scorer with three for the season.
Just six minutes later the Kent side leveled. A Nicky Deverdics cross from the left was helped behind for a corner by Matty Whichelow. Wood went to sleep from the set piece, allowing the home side to play a short ball which was expertly crossed towards the far post for Jack Parkinson to bury a diving header.
Just two minutes later it got worse.
A free-kick was awarded to Dover on the right and the delivery from Deverdics saw the Wood defensive line break, allowing Jamie Grimes to rush in and touch past Edwards.
Wood found themselves pressed back with the front three of Dover linking up well, until Wood set up a decent chance for themselves. Crawford flicked a ball forward for Ricky Shakes, who laid a pass into the path of Junior Morias, but he hesitated when well placed, allowing the Whites to clear.
Soon after Miller and Payne combined again, this time a combination of poor finishing and the offside flag came to Wood's rescue.
Fine glove work from Edwards at one end and stoic defending at the other prevented the scoreline being increased as the second half progressed.
It was Miller and Payne again after 64 minutes who went close to ending the game as a contest.
Former Luton Town forward Miller skipped past Conor Clifford and Scott Doe before setting up his strike partner at the far post, who was just short of connecting.
Deverdics and Miller then combined and with Edwards forced off his line, Miller spurned another chance by shooting wide.
Payne continued to keep the Wood defence occupied, winning a corner before Wood showed signs of a late fight back.
Miller lost possession and with Wood piling forward, Ben Nunn's low cross caused panic, the ball ricocheting off a Dover defender for a corner. Back came Dover with a half clearance falling for Deverdics, who hit his shot into the ground and against a post.
Wood finished the stronger and when Whichelow struck a corner from the right it was met superbly by the smallest man on the field. Morias was desperately unlucky and saw his header crash off the underside of the crossbar.
A final chance fell for Whichelow yet his goal-bound shot deflected off teammate Shakes.
Speaking afterwards Wood boss Allinson said: “The most disappointing thing for me was that we were again punished from crosses.
"I can see where we went wrong for both goals so we will be back out on the training pitch to put things right.
"That takes nothing away from the opposition today. Both crosses were superb and they play in a certain way that suits their height advantage. Their forwards got good quick service and were a real handful.
"They stopped us playing today. I hoped that with their formation we could afford to leave four in midfield and try and trouble them, but in truth it never really happened for the forwards today. What pleased me was the way we finished the game.
"We looked the fitter side and we will go on and learn from this before Grimsby Town arrive at Meadow Park next Saturday.”
