The hit BBC hospital soap Holby City will air its final ever episode tonight after 23 years on the nation's TV screens.

The show's cancellation was announced back in June 2021 after the BBC announced they'd made the "difficult decisions to make room for new opportunities and as part of the BBC's commitment to making more programs across the UK."

Ahead of the show's final this evening, original cast members Bob Barrett and Jaye Jacobs appeared on BBC Breakfast and confirmed that the axing of the show had nothing to do with the show itself.

To mark the ending of the well-loved show viewers are being told to expect former cast members to return and an ending that "brings peace".

With Barrett praising fans and saying they "have kept us going, and I think and hope they’ll be happy with the end.

"Not happy with the end, but going ‘Well, that was a great episode of Holby and that’s a good way to finish it."

What to expect in the final episode of Holby City:

The last ever episode will tie up each of the characters' storylines with the reverberations of Jac's surgery being felt around Darwin.

Plus, a wounded Dom feels more left out than ever after learning Josh and Ange have shut him out of a family crisis.

Meanwhile, Donna and Hanseen rally around Lexi after some bad news is deliveries but she is determined to seize the day.
