THE first batch of swine flu vaccines are being sent out to Barnet GPs this week.

Further deliveries to the rest of the practices in the borough will signal the start of the full vaccination programme, which will roll out over the next few weeks.

Injections of the vaccine will be prioritised to those at most risk of developing severe illness from the H1N1 virus.

Those include people aged over six months and under 65 years already in the seasonal flu vaccine at risk groups, pregnant women, and those in contact with people with lower immune systems.

People aged 65 and over in the current seasonal flu vaccine at risk groups will also be a priority, but doctors said this does not include otherwise healthy over 65s, as they appear to have some natural immunity to the virus.

Health bosses confirmed front line health and social care workers will be offered the vaccine at the same time as the first clinical at-risk groups, as they are at increased risk of infection and of transmitting that infection to susceptible patients.

Staff groups who will be invited to have the vaccine include those who have regular clinical contact with patients, and those directly involved in patient care.

Vaccination clinics for all eligible health and social care staff to receive the vaccine will be set up in the near future, doctors added.

NHS Barnet has said that although this vaccine is optional, they are encouraging eligible staff to get vaccinated and reduce the risk to their patients, families and themselves, and to reduce disruption caused by absences.

Patients who fall into one of the at-risk categories will be contacted by their GP Practice and NHS Barnet will be arranging additional vaccination clinics throughout the borough to support the delivery of the programme.

Dr Andrew Burnett, director of health improvement and medical director for NHS Barnet said: “NHS Barnet has been working closely with all local health staff and key stakeholders, which includes Barnet Council, to ensure that the vaccination delivery programme runs smoothly.”
