Almost £20 million worth of Hertfordshire police property is either listed for sale or has been recently sold, new figures reveal.

The nine buildings - including locations in Bushey, Watford and Rickmansworth - are valued at £19,953,510 but were all identified as surplus to requirements by auditors.

Other buildings located in Potters Bar, Hertford, Baldock, Berkhamsted, London Colney and Sawbridgeworth were also marketed.

The most prominent of the sites in South West Hertfordshire is Rickmansworth Police Station which has been vacant since February 2011 when local neighbourhood officers moved into Three Rivers District Council ’s headquarters.

The value set by the Hertfordshire Police Authority at the end of the last financial year on March 31 was £2,800,000 but the authority has so far been unable to find a buyer.

However, the sales of Bushey police station on Sparrows Herne and a house adjacent to Watford Police Station on Westland Road were both sold last month.

The buildings were listed at £525,000 and £460,000 respectively although the Police Authority declined to comment on how much they were actually sold for.

Bushey police station had been occupied by officers since 1884 however it has been empty since May 2011.

Money received from sales will be transferred into the constabulary’s overall budget, an official confirmed.

The most valuable of the force’s buildings on sale in the county is Hertford Police station in Ware Road which was valued at £12,218,510.

Shema Batson, Labour’s candidate for the new Police and Crime Commissioner role said: "The priority for me is that the money is spent on the safety of people in Hertfordshire.

"We have to find savings, this is being imposed on us by the government and there is a possibility of jobs being at risk in terms of making these savings.

"We must make sure the appropriate staff and officers are in appropriate places."

The sale of these assets comes as the authority looks to make £9 million of savings in this financial year.

The authorities strategic plan for 2012 to 2015 sets out £38.5 million of savings it intends to make over the next three years including reduction in staff and buildings.

A Hertfordshire police spokesman said: "The constabulary and the police authority are working hard to increase the efficiency of our buildings and assets in order to make the very best use of resources.

"The review of estates and subsequent sale of buildings, whereby some services were relocated, is one way the force is finding efficiencies while safeguarding frontline policing and keeping Hertfordshire a low-crime county."
